Il  gruppo  si  forma  verso la  fine del  1967 a Luton,  nel  Bedfordshire,  dalle ceneri  di due gruppi  -  John Evan Band  e McGregory’s Engine  –  che vedevano  al proprio interno Ian Anderson, Mick Abrahams, Glenn Cornick e Clive Bunker. Suonando per un periodo come resident band del celebre locale Marquee, i Jethro Tull si fanno notare da John Peel e Brian Matthews della Radio BBC, che iniziano a diffondere la musica del gruppo.
Nel 1968, dopo un’estate di concerti, arriva il discreto successo del primo album del gruppo, “This was”, fortemente legato a influenze blues. A quel punto Mick Abrahams lascia la band in seguito ai dissapori con Anderson, e viene sostituito da Martin Barre proprio mentre i Tull si avviano a registrare il loro secondo album, “Stand up”, all’inizio del 1969. Il risultato è un disco di grande successo, che apre al gruppo nuove possibilità commerciali tanto in Europa quanto, soprattutto, in America. La mescola musicale di Anderson e soci, uno strano e felice connubio di folk, musica classica, rock e musica etnica, impressione pubblico e media. Il gruppo passa il periodo successivo all’uscita del disco impegnato in diversi tour negli Stati Uniti, di crescente successo, senza però dimenticare di curare anche il proprio pubblico di casa, vale a dire quello inglese. Album come “Benefit”, “Aqualung”, “Thick as a brick” e “A passion play” confermano lo status di grande rock band dei Jethro Tull e li vedono crescere ulteriormente nella considerazione del pubblico. Intanto il gruppo attraversa varie vicissitudini relative al suo organico: Glenn Cornick abbandona e viene sostituito da Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond, Clive Bunker lascia il posto a Barriemore Barlow e con l’innesto del pianista John Evan la band si prepara ad affrontare il finire degli anni ’70. “Warchild”, “Too old to roll: too young to die”, “Minstrel in the gallery”, “Songs from the wood”, “Heavy horses” sono i titoli dei principali passaggi discografici dei Tull tra il finire degli anni ’70 e gli anni ’80, un periodo di tempo che vede diversi cambiamenti di organico intervenire al fianco della ormai solida coppia artistica composta da Ian Anderson e Martin Barre. “Crest of a knave” e “Roots to branches” sono gli episodi più recenti della discografia del gruppo, mentre dal canto suo Ian Anderson ha pubblicato un solo album, “Divinities”, che gli ha fruttato il primo posto nella classifica di Billboard per la prima volta dal 1973. Con oltre 60 milioni di album venduti e più di 2500 concerti eseguiti in 40 paesi, il gruppo prosegue la propria carriera pubblicando nel 1999 “Dot com”, il nuovo album di studio, che inaugura un nuovo contratto discografico con la Roadrunner Records. La formazione attuale del gruppo comprende Ian Anderson (voce, flauto), Martin Barre (chitarra), Andrew Giddings (tastiere), Jonathan Noyce (tastiere, basso) e Doane Perry (batteria).
